the hop-on hop-off route

ten stops west to east along the thames and back. what to do, what to skip, and where to get the shot at each one.

full day · ~9am to evening operators · Original Tour / Big Bus ticket · 48 hrs
1

Marble Arch

~9:00 · 15 min · the starting line

do

  • pick up the bus here where Oxford Street meets Hyde Park.
  • quick look at the marble arch itself, then go — it's a photo stop, not a long one.
  • grab coffee before you board; long day ahead.

shot

  • low angle through the arch with traffic streaking past for movement.
  • Speakers' Corner on the Hyde Park side if anyone's holding court.
2

Buckingham Palace

~9:30 · 45 min

do

  • Changing of the Guard if the timing lands — check the day, it isn't daily. usually ~11am, so you may catch it on the way back.
  • walk down The Mall for the tree-lined approach to the palace.
  • Victoria Memorial out front for a raised view back at the gates.

shot

  • centre the gates from the memorial steps for symmetry.
  • tight on a guard for detail; wide down The Mall for scale and flags.
  • St James's Park lake bridge nearby — best skyline view in the area.
3

Big Ben & Westminster

hop off ~10:30 · 60 min

do

  • the densest cluster of the day: Big Ben, Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Downing Street all within a few minutes.
  • walk onto Westminster Bridge for the full Parliament frontage.
  • Parliament Square for the statues (Churchill, Mandela, Millicent Fawcett).

shot

  • best Big Ben angle: from Westminster Bridge looking back, or the south bank end of the bridge.
  • red phone box on the corner of Parliament Square with the tower behind — the classic.
  • a red bus crossing the bridge with Big Ben behind = the postcard. wait for one.
4

London Eye

~11:45 · 45 min

do

  • cross to the South Bank — the riverside walk itself is half the fun.
  • ride it for the aerial view (book ahead to skip the queue), or just shoot it from below.
  • street food and buskers all along the South Bank if you need a break.

shot

  • look straight up into the centre of the wheel for a geometric frame.
  • from across the river (Embankment side) to get the whole wheel reflected in the Thames.
  • golden hour here is unreal if you loop back later.
5

Trafalgar Square

~12:45 · 45 min · galleries free

do

  • Nelson's Column, the four bronze lions, the fountains.
  • National Gallery right on the square is free — duck in even for 20 min.
  • good lunch spot; lots of options just off the square toward Soho.

shot

  • climb onto a lion (everyone does) for the elevated square shot.
  • fountains with the gallery columns behind, or framed toward Big Ben down Whitehall.
  • check the Fourth Plinth — rotating modern artwork, always a talking point.
6

St Paul's Cathedral

~13:45 · 60 min

do

  • climb to the dome galleries — Whispering Gallery inside, then the Stone & Golden Galleries up top. lots of steps, worth it.
  • the interior alone is worth a look even if you skip the climb.
  • walk the Millennium Bridge afterward toward the Tate Modern.

shot

  • the famous one: from Millennium Bridge, dome framed dead-centre down the walkway.
  • One New Change rooftop nearby — free, frames the dome beautifully.
  • interior dome looking straight up if photography's allowed that day.
7

Tower of London

hop off ~14:45 · 2 hrs+

do

  • Crown Jewels — go straight there first, queues build fast through the afternoon.
  • free Beefeater (Yeoman Warder) tour included with entry — genuinely the best bit.
  • see the ravens, the White Tower, the armoury. budget proper time, this is the big one.

shot

  • White Tower from the inner ward; a Beefeater in uniform if they're happy to.
  • the ravens up close — patient wildlife framing.
  • walls in foreground with the Shard rising behind for old-meets-new.
8

Tower Bridge

~17:00 · 30 min · lower deck free

do

  • walk across the lower deck — free, and a great crossing.
  • the high-level glass walkway + Victorian engine rooms are a paid add-on if you want inside.
  • check bridge-lift times online — seeing it raise for a boat is special.

shot

  • best angle: from the south bank (Shad Thames / Potters Fields Park) looking back at the full bridge.
  • St Katharine Docks side for a quieter, boats-in-foreground composition.
  • stay for the lights — it's stunning lit up at dusk.
9

Piccadilly Circus

~17:45 · 20 min

do

  • the big curved screens, the buzz, the Eros statue. quick stop on the loop back west.
  • gateway to Soho, Chinatown and Carnaby Street if you want to wander before dinner.

shot

  • night is better here — the screens pop once it's dark.
  • slow shutter for light trails of buses and cabs sweeping round.
  • steps under the screens for the people-watching crowd shot.
10

Covent Garden

hop off ~18:15 · end here

do

  • street performers in the piazza — magicians, opera singers, the lot. best free show in london.
  • the covered market for shops, stalls and dinner. plenty of pubs and restaurants around.
  • Neal's Yard a short walk away — tiny, colourful, worth the detour.

shot

  • balcony above the market looking down on a performer mid-act.
  • Neal's Yard for the rare burst of colour against london brick.
  • warm market lighting in the evening — great for candids.
