half day · slow start

the half-day route

a midday start that keeps the iconic, walkable core plus St Paul's, ending at covent garden for dinner. skips the tower and the far-flung stops to fit an afternoon.

half day · ~12:30 to 18:30 mostly on foot + the bus 6 stops
1

Westminster

key stop ~12:30 · 60 min · start here

do

  • the dense iconic cluster: Big Ben, Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Downing Street all within a few minutes.
  • walk onto Westminster Bridge for the full Parliament frontage.
  • grab lunch around here before you set off if you're starting hungry.

shot

  • best Big Ben angle: from Westminster Bridge looking back, or the south bank end.
  • red phone box on Parliament Square corner with the tower behind — the classic.
  • a red bus crossing the bridge with Big Ben behind = the postcard. wait for one.
2

London Eye & South Bank

~13:45 · 45 min

do

  • cross the river and walk the South Bank — the riverside stroll is half the fun.
  • ride the Eye for the aerial view (book ahead to skip the queue), or just shoot it from below.
  • street food and buskers all along here if you want a bite on the move.

shot

  • look straight up into the centre of the wheel for a geometric frame.
  • from the Embankment side to catch the whole wheel reflected in the Thames.
  • the South Bank itself is great for candids and street portraits.
3

St Paul's Cathedral

~14:45 · 60 min

do

  • short hop east along the river to get here.
  • climb the dome galleries for one of the best city views — lots of steps, worth it.
  • the interior alone is worth a look even if you skip the climb.

shot

  • the famous one: from Millennium Bridge, dome framed dead-centre down the walkway.
  • One New Change rooftop nearby — free, frames the dome beautifully.
  • interior dome looking straight up if photography's allowed that day.
4

Trafalgar Square

~16:00 · 40 min · galleries free

do

  • Nelson's Column, the four bronze lions, the fountains.
  • National Gallery right on the square is free — duck in even for 20 min.
  • good coffee/break spot before the last push.

shot

  • climb onto a lion (everyone does) for the elevated square shot.
  • fountains with the gallery columns behind, or framed toward Big Ben down Whitehall.
  • check the Fourth Plinth — rotating modern artwork, always a talking point.
5

Piccadilly Circus

~16:50 · 30 min

do

  • the big curved screens, the buzz, the Eros statue.
  • gateway to Soho, Chinatown and Carnaby Street — wander if you've time before dinner.
  • short walk from here down to Covent Garden to finish.

shot

  • slow shutter for light trails of buses and cabs sweeping round.
  • steps under the screens for the people-watching crowd shot.
  • comes alive as the light drops — by now it's getting moody.
6

Covent Garden

key stop ~17:40 · dinner ~18:30

do

  • street performers in the piazza — magicians, opera singers, the lot. best free show in london.
  • the covered market for shops, stalls and dinner. plenty of pubs and restaurants around.
  • Neal's Yard a short walk away — tiny, colourful, worth the detour.
  • settle in for dinner around 18:30 to round off the afternoon.

shot

  • balcony above the market looking down on a performer mid-act.
  • Neal's Yard for the rare burst of colour against london brick.
  • warm market lighting in the evening — great for candids.
